Tax a goods vehicle for the first time
Tax a goods vehicle in your name for the 1st time at the goods rate where the design gross vehicle weight does not exceed 3,500kg
DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS
- Completed Motor Tax Renewal Form
- Completed RF111A Form – Goods Only Declaration
- Full Certificate of Current Commercial Insurance
- Log Book / Vehicle Registration Cert (VRC)
- Documentary Proof from Revenue Commissioners re Business registration
Or
- Accountant letter (on headed paper, including relevant accountancy registration details e.g. Certified / Chartered Accountant) that confirms registration with Revenue in relation to the business and the Revenue registered number
Or
- Official written confirmation letter on headed paper signed by your employer and evidence of your income tax registration number with the Revenue Commissioners (PPSN) (Employee)
Note : The name and address, nature of business, etc. should match for all documents submitted.
Any applications failing to meet these criteria will be returned to the applicant.

Tax a vehicle - company, self employed or a sole trader
You will need to submit the following to the Ennis motor tax office :

Completed Motor Tax Renewal Form (1 of the following)
- RFI00A (for standard motor tax renewals)
- RF100B (as issued by the Department of Transport, Shannon)
- RF111 (if there is a change in particulars, e.g. tax class)
- RF100 (for new vehicles or vehicles never previously taxed in the Republic of Ireland, usually
received by the registered owner after purchasing a new vehicle or after importing a vehicle).
- RF111A Goods Only Declaration signed and stamped at the local Garda Station. This declaration
must contain details of the business the vehicle will be used for together with your income tax
registration number. - Full Certificate of Current commercial insurance i.e. you have to submit the original insurance certificate for the
vehicle. The insurance certificate should show that the carriage of goods in the course of trade or
business is covered. - Log Book or VRC (if the vehicle has been previously taxed). If the application concerns the tax class chenge to the Goods rate, the submission of the VRC will be required.

Proof from Revenue : If the vehicle is registered to a private business - Written confirmation from the Revenue Commissioners confirming that you are registered with them in relation to your business.
If the vehicle is registered to a company, then Revenue Commissioners confirmation
is not required.
If the private individual is an employee of a company, see below for guidance.» The Revenue confirmation letter must be dated within the last 12 months and include:
- Your name and address,
- Your Revenue registered number,
- Your Revenue status e.g. self employed/sole trader etc.,
- Your business/occupation.
Also note that a herd number, flock number or tax clearance certificate will not suffice.

Your vehicle must have a current CVRT (commercial vehicle roadworthiness test) and tested at an approved DOE test centre.
NSAI approved test centres in Co. Clare include:

- Banner Test Centre, Darragh, Ennis;
- Clare Vehicle Test Centre, Clarecastle.

You do not have to submit a copy of the test along with your motor tax application, as the test will have been uploaded to the national database at the test centre.
If the application concerns tax class change to the goods carrying rate, the submission of the VRC will be required.
Only in the case of 1st time taxings of imported vehicles, you will need to submit a weight docket with your application.
Please note if a vehicle is used in any private capacity i.e. social, pleasure or domestic purposes, it must be taxed at the private rate.
Tax a vehicle - Employee or PAYE worker
You will need to submit the following to the Ennis motor tax office :

Motor Tax Renewal Form (1 of the following)
- RFI00A (for standard motor tax renewals)
- RF100B (as issued by the Department of Transport, Shannon)
- RF111 (if there is a change in particulars, e.g. tax class)
- RF100 (for new vehicles or vehicles never previously taxed in the Republic of Ireland, usually
received by the registered owner after purchasing a new vehicle or after importing a vehicle).
- RF111A Goods Only Declaration signed and stamped at the local Garda Station. This declaration
must contain details of the business the vehicle will be used for together with your income tax
registration number. - Official written confirmation letter on headed paper signed by your employer
» The official letter from your employer must be current and include the following
confirmation:- The nature of the business,
- That you are an employee,
- That the vehicle is used by you solely for the carriage of goods in the course of your employment and the vehicle registration number,
- Your employer's Revenue registered number and your employer's address,
- Your PPS Number.
Evidence of your income tax registration is also required e.g. European Health Insurance Card/Social Services Card or any correspondence from Revenue within the last year showing your PPS number.
